DJI FPV drones: Do you have the correct certifications to fly?

With the exciting new launch of the DJI FPV drone in Australia, many operators will be itching to get their hands on this new take of the “First Person View” experience and try out DJI’s first ever racing drone for themselves. But for those looking to use the FPV goggles and fly this high speed drone, there is a catch; you need to make sure you are properly certified first.

The accompanied goggles that come with the drone, may make for a unique flying experience, however, unless certified, they are only legally able to be used outdoors if you have a spotter with you so as to not affect the “line of sight” requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

If you are looking to use this drone and the FPV goggles solo, you as an operator will not be meeting the line of sight requirements to fly the drone. Therefore to use the drone legally, you need to make sure you have a Remote pilot license (RePL), and a Remote Operators Certificate (ReOC) authorising Extended visual line of sight (EVLOS) or Beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).

These regulations are put in place as the use of FPV devices can limits an operators overall situational awareness and may lead to disorientation, which in turn can lead to an increased risk of the drone crashing with people, birds or even other aircraft. Without the situational awareness of a line of sight view to the drone, the operator may not be able to manoeuvre the drone in time to prevent a collision.

If you are looking to purchase the DJI FPV, make sure to consider how you will use the drone and the accompanying certifications you will need in order to legally operate it.
